Through my science and artistic endeavors, I
have taken notice of the aesthetic beauty that resides within the organic
intricacies of nature. I interpret these aesthetics and their inherent
modularity and apply them to sculpture work through the manipulation of form
and pattern in various materials, which include ceramic, metal and glass.
I chose these materials because they embody different characteristics of the
basic building blocks that make up patterns and form in life.
I place an emphasis on the processes I use to create my work and focus on exploring techniques I have become familiar with, as well as to the processes that have been appropriated from other methods of manufacturing, such as computerized numerical controlled (CNC) machining and three-dimensional printing. The use of these processes allows me to incorporate mathematics into the process of exploring form and pattern. It has been suggested that there is a close relationship between the natural laws of the universe and Pythagorean geometry.
I am intrigued with the concept while fundamental laws influence the specific formation of natural form, it is through the evolution of form that variation occurs. My work focuses on personal interpretations of naturally occurring form from the microscopic realm and the variations that can occur through the process of creating these sculptures in the studio.
Through the examination of microscopic form and naturally occurring pattern, coupled with multiple studio practices and my perception as an artist, I produce work that is meant to engage an innate appreciation for organic form. I create forms that contain variations introduced by my artistic hand, which resemble familiar biological aesthetics, but are truly manifestations of my humanity.
